Palazzo di Santo Stefano

The Palazzo di Santo Stefano (Santo Stefano Palace) is an example of 12th century Norman architecture. Originally built as a fortress to protect the city from Saracen invasions, the palace was later transformed into a private residence and then into a hotel.

An interesting fact about the palace is that throughout the centuries it has been inhabited by numerous historical figures, including Norman king Roger II and German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who spent some time in Taormina and wrote some poems inspired by the city.

Additionally, the palace is famous for its privileged location, offering a panoramic view of the Strait of Messina and Mount Etna. In the palace’s inner courtyard, a 12th century Norman fountain can also be admired.

Overall, the Palazzo di Santo Stefano represents an important example of Norman architecture in Sicily and is a must-see for anyone looking to discover the history and culture of Taormina.
