Funicular – Cable car

From the center to the beach

The Taormina cable car is an iconic tourist attraction in the Sicilian city. Built in 1873, it is the oldest cable car in Italy still in operation. The cable car connects the city center of Taormina with the beach, offering visitors a spectacular view of the Ionian coast and the Etna volcano.

An interesting fact is that the cable car was also used as a means of transport for the inhabitants of Mount Tauro to come down to the city for shopping and work. Furthermore, during World War II, the Allies used it to transport soldiers and equipment.

The cable car is also famous for being used in the 1959 film “La Dolce Vita” by Federico Fellini. The iconic Italian film helped make the cable car even more popular among tourists.

In short, the Taormina cable car is a piece of local history and a must-see attraction for those visiting the city, offering a breathtaking view of the Sicilian coast.
