Badia Vecchia

A 9th century Benedictine abbey with Norman architecture

The Old Abbey of Taormina, also known as “Badia Vecchia” is an ancient Benedictine abbey located in the city of Taormina, Sicily. It was built in the 9th century by Benedictine monks to replace an existing structure dating back to the 6th century.

The Old Abbey is an example of Norman architecture, with a limestone façade and a series of decorated arches. Inside, visitors can admire frescoes and mosaics dating back to the 12th and 13th century, including a representation of the archangel Michael.

The Badia Vecchia was also used as a fortress during the Middle Ages, as it is situated in a strategic location on top of a hill overlooking the city and the sea. Over the centuries, the structure has been used for various purposes, including as a monastery, prison, and barracks.

In the 19th century, the Old Abbey was purchased by an Englishman, who turned the structure into a private villa. During this time, a panoramic terrace was added, offering spectacular views of the city of Taormina and the sea.

Its panoramic location over the city, combined with its history and the beauty of its architecture, make it a must-see destination for those visiting Taormina.
