Perched atop the highest point of the cliff, Castello Rufo Ruffo of Scaletta Zanclea follows the natural roughness of the land.
The massive trapezoidal structure and the high verticality of the walls are lightened by the elegant bifore that open on the various fronts while inside we find large well-lit rooms with high barrel vaults, so, more than a gloomy and menacing fortress, it recalls a “Dongione”, elegant and lavish residence of the Feudatory.
On the eastern side of the Castello Rufo Ruffo was the advanced fortress where in the 1600s numerous cannons were installed, making the coast invulnerable.
A privileged place, rich in history and adventure, it saw the deeds of notable figures such as the bold Macalda from Scaletta or Emperor Charles V who stayed there in 1535. In the hall, an ancient building marks the base of a pre-existing tower. Unfortunately, the Castle has not been spared from the attacks of time and the neglect of men and bears its evident signs.
In 1969, Prince Ruffo donated it to the Town. In the 80s, under the care of the Superintendent and the Town, a careful restoration was started.
