Castle of Mola

The mysterious Norman fortress

The Castle of Mola, located in Castelmola, is a historic defensive work that fascinates with its mysterious history and the curiosities that surround it. Despite the fact that only the ruins of the powerful Norman walls remain, it is possible to deduce that the castle was built under Costantino Caramalo, the last strategist of Tauromenion in the 9th century. However, most historians agree on an earlier construction in the Roman period.

In 1334, the Castle was used exclusively as a fortress for defensive functions and for the detention of prisoners of war. It formed the strongest ring of the chain of castles of Milazzo, Ficarra, Tripi, Castroreale, Castiglione and Francavilla for centuries. The main entrance of the castle is marked by the ancient Mola Door, inserted along the staircase carved into the rock.

On the top of the arch the key door bears the emblem of Castelmola castle with three towers and the following inscription: Castle Faithful to His Majesty – Year 1578.
