Odeon Theatre

Theatrical performances, concerts, and gladiator shows

The Odeon Theatre in Taormina is an ancient Roman theater located in the city of Taormina, Sicily, Italy. Located at the back of the Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, It was built in the 3rd century AD and could accommodate up to 3,500 spectators. The theater has been used for various functions, including theatrical performances, concerts, and gladiator shows.

One curiosity is that the theater was also used as a stage for the performance of scenic games until the 19th century. Later it was used as a quarry for stone to build the citizens’ houses in Taormina.

In 1866, the theater was restored and reopened as a theater for theatrical and musical performances. Today, the Odeon Theatre hosts numerous cultural events throughout the year, including classical music concerts, theater performances, film festivals, and dance shows.
