Cathedral of San Nicolò di Bari and Duomo Square

Place of worship of medieval origin

The cathedral of San Nicolò di Bari, the duomo, was built in the 13th century on the remains of a Greek temple dedicated to Zeus and later converted into a Christian church during the Norman period.

The Piazza del Duomo is one of the main tourist attractions in Taormina and is famous for its panoramic location with breathtaking views of Mount Etna and the sea. The square is in Corso Umberto and is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and bars, and is a perfect place to walk around and admire the architecture of the ancient city.

An interesting curiosity about the ancient Greek temple is that the archaeologists discovered that the temple was built to be perfectly aligned with Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, which is located a few kilometers away.

Additionally, you can notice that the facade of the duomo has been decorated with 12th-century Byzantine mosaics, these mosaics were found during some restoration work and returned to their original position.

Another interesting fact is that the square houses a monumental 19th century fountain designed by architect Camillo Camillani. The fountain was made of local marble and decorated with statues of mythological deities.

In general, the cathedral of San Nicolò di Bari and the Piazza del Duomo of Taormina are a must-see for those visiting the city, as they offer a unique experience to admire the beauty of nature and historical architecture.
